Honored Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation in January 2019 to help medical students and the normal population for treatment. It was focused on constructing as soon as possible. This hospital was built on 222 acres of land that was delivered to the Indian government by the state government in February 2020. JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) is a funding agency that funds this hospital through completing a loan agreement in 2022. JICA agency informed the Health and Family Welfare minister of Tamil Nadu MA. Subramanian said that construction would begin by the end of 2024 and be completed by 2028.

As per the current date of AIIMS, Madurai AIIMS has 750 beds. The hospital will soon be able to cater to around 1500 OPD patients per day.
